Active Weekend Near Trakai: Kayaking, Fishing and Cycling
Kayaking on Lake Galvė, fishing in the Trakai lakes, and cycling routes — how to plan an active weekend from Prie Trakų Estate.

The Trakai district is one of Lithuania's most active outdoor destinations: more than 300 lakes within a 30 km radius, a good network of marked cycling routes, and several calm rivers. Prie Trakų Estate in Petkėniškės makes an excellent base — just 7–25 km from the main activities.
Kayaking on Lake Galvė
Lake Galvė is 361 hectares with 21 islands and clear water. Local operators offer:
- A classic loop around the Island Castle (2 hours, €15–20 per person).
- A sunset route — unforgettable castle silhouette from the water.
- A full-day trip into lakes Bernardinai and Skaistis (6–8 hours).
The closest rental base is Galve Kayaks on Trakų street (about 8 km from the estate). Kayaks are available for two or four paddlers.
Fishing in the Trakai region
The Trakai district is one of the country's quietest fishing areas. Highlights:
- Lake Galvė — pike, perch, pike-perch. Requires a recreational fishing permit (from €3/day) and a Trakai Historical National Park permit (€5).
- Lakes Bernardinai and Skaistis — bream and tench. Permits issued together.
- Papareiškės water body (about 6 km from the estate) — carp and crucian carp, with seasonal promotions.
Season runs from mid-April to late October. Ice fishing on Lake Skaistis is popular in winter.
Cycling routes
Main marked routes:
- Trakai Historical Park loop (28 km) — from Trakai centre around Lake Galvė to Užutrakis, through forests to Lentvaris and back.
- Aukštadvaris hill route (~35 km) — harder, with proper climbs across the regional park's meadows and lakes.
- Forest loops near Petkėniškės — short 7–12 km circuits accessible straight from the estate gate.
You can rent bikes at shops in Trakai (from €10/day).
On-site activities
If you never want to leave the estate, we have:
- Regulation-size basketball court — for tournaments or a pickup game.
- Outdoor tennis and volleyball — full equipment on site.
- Paintball field — teams up to 5 vs 5, safe clearances, full kit included.

FAQ
Do I need experience to kayak on Lake Galvė?
No. The lake is calm, bases give a short briefing and life vests. Children from age 6 can ride in a tandem with parents.
Does the estate issue fishing permits?
No — permits are issued by the Trakai Historical National Park. The estate can help you order them in advance.
What bike do I need for the Trakai routes?
Most routes are paved or well-packed gravel. A city bike is fine; a gravel or MTB gives more freedom on forest loops.
When is the best weekend for an active trip?
Mid-May to early September. Autumn offers beautiful colour but shorter days. Winter sports run December–February, depending on weather.

Our retreat sits among rolling meadows, forests and lakes — made for anyone worn out by city noise. The more natural and close to nature, the better. You'll find three villas on the estate, and the first one is yours: a spacious modern living area with a dining table and fireplace, a stylish fully-equipped kitchen, and four bedrooms — three with double beds and one with two large bunk beds that the younger guests love (and adults don't mind). A bathroom with shower is right alongside, and a sauna can be booked as an extra. When you arrive you'll likely meet me first — I'm Artūras, the owner. I built this place with my own hands, so I know every corner and I'm happy to show you around and suggest what to see or do nearby. Petkėniškės village sits in one of the most beautiful corners of the Lithuanian countryside — Trakai Castle is close by, and you can easily plan a cycling, horseback or kayaking trip. And if you'd rather stay on the estate, the sports ground is ready for volleyball, basketball or tennis.
