Mushroom Foraging in Lithuanian Forests

Mushroom foraging — or grybavimas — is more than a hobby in Lithuania. It's a national pastime passed down through generations.

The Season

The best time for mushroom hunting is late summer through autumn, typically August to October. After a few rainy days followed by warmth, the forests come alive with fungi.

Where to Go

Lithuania's vast forests are perfect for foraging. Dzūkija National Park is legendary for its mushroom abundance. Aukštaitija's pine forests also offer excellent hunting grounds.

What to Look For

Baravykai (Boletus)

The king of Lithuanian mushrooms. Look for brown caps and thick stems near birch and pine trees.

Voveraitės (Chanterelles)

Golden, trumpet-shaped beauties found in mossy areas under deciduous trees.

Raudonikiai (Orange-cap Boletus)

Found near aspen and birch trees, recognizable by their orange caps.

Essential Tips

  • Go early morning when mushrooms are fresh and easier to spot
  • Bring a wicker basket — plastic bags make mushrooms sweat
  • Cut mushrooms at the base, don't pull them out
  • When in doubt, leave it out — only pick what you can identify with certainty

Stay in a forest cabin and wake up to your own private hunting grounds.
