Žemuogės (Wild Strawberries) — June

Tiny, intensely sweet berries hiding in sunny clearings. The most aromatic berry you'll ever taste.

Mėlynės (Blueberries) — July to August

Found in pine forests on acidic soil. Stain your fingers blue while filling your bucket.

Avietės (Wild Raspberries) — July to August

Look for them along forest edges and in clearings. Sweeter and more fragrant than cultivated varieties.

Bruknės (Lingonberries) — August to September

Tart red berries perfect for jams and sauces. Grow in pine forests.

Spanguolės (Cranberries) — September to November

Found in bogs and wetlands. Harvest after the first frost for sweeter berries.

Where to Go

Dzūkija's vast forests are the best berry-hunting grounds. The Labanoras and Aukštaitija forests are also excellent.

Tips for Success

• Wear long pants and closed shoes — forests have ticks
• Bring a bucket or basket with a strap so your hands are free
• Go early morning when berries are cool and firm
• Leave some for the wildlife
