The Art of Lithuanian Sauna: Pirtis Traditions

The Lithuanian pirtis (sauna) is far more than a place to sweat. It's a sacred space where Lithuanians have gathered for centuries to cleanse, heal, and connect.

A Brief History

In ancient Lithuania, the pirtis was considered a holy place. Children were born here. The sick were treated here. Important life events were celebrated here.

The Ritual

A proper Lithuanian sauna experience follows a specific rhythm:

Heating

The sauna is heated with wood, ideally birch or alder. The stones should be glowing hot.

Vantojimas (Whisking)

Birch or oak branches — called vantai — are soaked in warm water and used to gently beat the skin. This improves circulation and releases aromatic oils.

Cooling

Step outside into the fresh air, or plunge into a cold lake or snow. Repeat the heat-cool cycle 2-3 times.

Rest

Wrap yourself in a linen towel and rest. Drink herbal tea or kvass.
